My Ruuvi-Tag Experience
I was looking for a better way of finding out how hot my Hot-tub is. Respective it was suppose to be always around 39C or 102~103F.
I was using “Thermo Pro” wireless for a while already and it worked pretty good except for the accuracy and the lasting of the batteries.
Since the transmitter are not watertight at all I double vacuumed the transmitter with my little electric food vacuum machine and this worked great for sealing the transmitter until it needed new batteries but not such a big deal to vacuum it again.
But one problem remained accuracy was not that great.
Searching at the time Ruuvi never even came up in any search engine but one day reading about it on a user comment page where other people where looking too.
Headline was something about what are you using to see temps wireless and one user answered Ruuvi.
I was curious and so it started since I liked the concept. Quick I found out cellphone app.
Well, I hate cellphones because all are pure spyware. Yes, I have one too but it’s 98% of the time off completely or in airplane mode. The other one I have is obsolete G3 but still works also almost always off.
Asking Ruuvi about when they would have a windows version of the Ruuvi app…………..well, you know the answer…….when-never! Still have a little hope ! ??.
Yet I was still so intrigued with Ruuvi, I ordered a Ruuvi-Air when it came out as a promotion.
In short then I ordered another 2 Ruuvi-tag pro 3in1, then another 2 3in1, then another Ruuvi-air and a 3in1 finally 1 more Ruuvi-ta pro 2in1 watertight.
The reason, well I did with a 3in1 the same as with the Thermo-pro, I vacuum-packed it, since it is not waterproof, dumped it in the hot-tub filter-basket and it gave me data 20 meters away.
Finally perfect and it works perfectly except………..I thought maybe I should use a 2in1 waterproof and I can dump it directly in the filter. Hot-tub filter basket is only ~6cm deep. I ordered a 2in1 waterproof.
Contacting Ruuvi to over e-mail and most of the time Henri replied to me, and told me due to the constant heat I should rethink it since it may loose the waterproof part due to heat. I think he got tired of my questions ![]()
sorry Henry and his wife answered.
The snag additionally was the 2in1 waterproof trying it out on top of the hot-tub cover I got almost no distance on that one. Further then ~1 meter away and signal was dead.
Well, in short, Henri never experience this problem before and neither did I with all the other tags but as generous as Ruuvi was he told me he would send me just the electronic part alone to replace the tag but when it came, Ruuvi sent me a complete 2in1 in the box. Thanks.
In the meantime I made some new discoveries. I vacuumed a 3in1 pro put it back in the filter-basket and made the same experience as before, even double vacuum packed the tag told me humidity is ~65% and climbing, slowly every day a bit more but very slow. My conclusion once it would hit 90% I would just repack it new after letting it sit for a while.
Researching why a vacuumed packed item would still have humidity I found out the bags, depend on the quality, would still let humidity in.
I got me better vacuum rolls and found plastic bags that are promising 100% waterproof.
Now came the 2in1 but I told myself, wait a minute, it’s better to have the 3in1 since it will tell me always the humidity and I can do something before the tag would be waterlogged even vacuum packed and in the plastic bag.
Even better, now I have a housing from the 2in1 waterproof, switch the 3in1 out into the 2in1 housing and use the 2in1 in the fridge.
The 3in1 is now in the 2in1 housing, then I vacuumed the 3in1 and stick it in the 100% waterproof plastic-bag and dump it in the filter-basket.
In conclusion it works 100% so far and the humidity is 56% and so far never moved yet. Yet this way with the 3in1 I can keep an eye on it. Just in case.
I know Ruuvi has now one with external probe which is a great idea, but I don’t like it, it is a 2in1 and not a 3in1. I think Ruuvi should discard the 2in1, make the same with the 3in1 and give 2 Ruuvi tops, one with the hole and the white screen and a top without the hole so you as a consumer can switch out the tops according to your needs.
Ohhh Boy, sorry Henri
my 2 cents on the Ruuvi-tags. ![]()
